Gratitude for Food

During this week, in particular, we find ourselves grateful for all kinds of delicious foods. We feast on the bounty, and it is a wonderful time to celebrate and express our thankfulness!

I’m wondering, though, how grateful we are for the ease of access we have to food on a daily basis. How much do we take that for granted? I know I’m certainly guilty of it. There has not been a single day in my entire life when I have woken up and wondered if I was going to get to eat that day. My biggest questions are usually about how I will select what I’m going to eat out of the many, many options I have. We are very spoiled when it comes to both access to and variety of foods available to us.

This post is not meant to be a downer on our big Thanksgiving celebrations. By all means, feast away and enjoy!! But let’s be mindful of the blessings that we truly have. And let’s be sure that we and our families are aware that there are millions of people around the world who DON’T have enough food and who certainly don’t have countless options in what they are going to eat. When we remember this, we will more likely keep our food complaints in check. We also might feel prompted to do something to take action in helping to feed the hungry around the world. (Wouldn’t THAT be a wonderful mission for your family to embark on together?)

But no matter the day, the meal, or the food options, let’s be proactive in modeling gratitude for it. God is great. God is good. Let us thank Him for our food. Every day.
