Music Review: Slugs & Bugs

Looking for music that will entertain and engage your young children but won’t drive you crazy at the same time? I’d like to introduce you to the entire Slugs & Bugs collection. Randall Goodgame and Andrew Peterson, both seasoned singer/songwriters, bring their talents of storytelling, creativity, humor, imagination, and just really good music to create a wonderful blend of songs that entertain and uplift children and their parents alike.

How have they mastered this art? Well, it can only be because these guys are dads. Dads who are obviously well-involved in the dailyness of diaper changes, toys, picky eaters, pajama drama (an actual title of one of their songs), endless questions by preschoolers, and the like. They get it. And you get the feeling that these songs came from the natural overflow of the goings-on in the Goodgame and Peterson households. And in true dad form, they have found the perfect balance of silliness and depth…and put it to really catchy music. (Also in true dad form, they crack themselves up, which is pretty funny.)

Their first CD, Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies, includes songs about tractors, spaceships, bears, the postman, beans, tigers, dreams, dragons, and a host of other fun things in kids’ lives and imaginations. But they also include songs that talk about the love of a parent for their child and the love of God for His children. As much as “Piggy Little Toes” guarantees to get your foot tappin’, “You Can Always Come Home” promises to bring a lump to your throat. Again, the perfect blend of silliness and sentiment.

The Slugs & Bugs Under Where? CD includes songs about swings, bugs, wagons, food, holey socks, dizziness, the potty, ninjas, and little ones’ desires to “help” their parents, as well as songs about being special, having a precious baby boy, and confessing your sins to Jesus. You’ll find yourself singing “Mexican Rhapsody” at random times, doing a bit of head-banging to the beat of “I Wanna Help,” and I DARE you to try and keep a straight face when listening to “Under Where?”.

Want your children to memorize more Bible verses? The Sing the Bible with Slugs & Bugs CD is a great tool for that! Not only are there songs that list the books of the Old and New Testaments, but the majority of the songs are word-for-word from Scripture (NIV). This CD also features The African Children’s Choir and Sally Lloyd-Jones, author of The Jesus Storybook Bible. These songs will, undoubtedly, ingrain biblical truths and values into your children’s hearts. They may also evoke lots of questions, which can lead to deeper spiritual conversations between you and your children. But, um, good luck with answering the questions that may arise from “Alien.”

And since it is the Christmas season, you will certainly want to check out the Slugs & Bugs Christmas CD! Merriment abounds in these songs of gingerbread houses, toys, wrapping paper, Santa, Christmas trees, camels, and–er–hot dog buns. Your family will rejoice as you sing along with some familiar carols as well as some new tunes that celebrate the birth of Jesus! You’ll want to put “Happy Birthday, Jesus” on repeat the morning of December 25th.

Each of these CDs can be purchased at slugsandbugs.com. While you’re there, you can also pick up their DVD of animated videos, a poster, or a t-shirt.
